TheliteraturethatexploresthecompatibilityofIslamandhumanrightsistornbetweenoneapproachthatfocusesonreinterpretingIslamicscriptureandanotherthatconcentratesonreconfiguringMuslimsensibility.Sinceonecannotbeunderstoodwithouttheother,bothapproachesfailtoaccountforchangewithintheirrespectivedomains.InRethinkingIslamandHumanRights,leadingIslamandhumanrightsscholarOzcanKelesexamineshowsocialmovementpracticeunknowinglyandunintentionallyproducesIslamicknowledgeonhumanrights(i.e.,change)inbothscripturalreinterpretationandsocietaldisposition,throughafocusontheinteractionbetweenthetwo.RethinkingIslamandHumanRightsweavestogethertheoreticalinsightsfromarangeofdisciplines,whilereworkingprocesstracingmethodology,tofocusonasinglecasestudyanalysisofthepracticesoftheHizmetmovement(alsoknownastheG羹lenmovement)tofleshoutthedynamicsofthisinteractivechangeandthecentralityofpractice-basedknowledgeproductiontherein.Indoingso,Kelesdemonstrateshowandwhysocialmovementpracticeorganically,unassumingly,unintentionallyandoften,counter-intentionally,producessociallytransformativeformalizedIslamicknowledgeonhumanrights.Heshowshowitispossibletoaccountfortheproduction,assimilation,legitimization,andexternalizationofIslamicknowledgethroughasinglerelationalprocessonsomeofthemostintransigentissues:apostasyandwomen’srights.Consequently,thisbookoffersanimportantpathwaytore-assessage-oldchallengesatthecross-sectionalimpasseofchange,stability,andreligiousknowledgeproduction,whichextendsbeyondthoseassociatedwithIslamandhumanrights.
